A hidden guardian of crystal-clear tanks, the Japanese Trapdoor Snail is one of the best algae eaters in the freshwater world. Unlike other snails, it scrubs surfaces without leaving a trail of eggs — making it a favorite for aquascapers, planted tanks, and ponds alike. Its smooth, coiled shell ranges from earthy brown to deep green, often etched with subtle spiral patterns like a spellbound rune.
Peaceful, cold- and warm-water hardy, and long-lived, this snail gets its name from the protective “trapdoor” it uses to seal itself in when disturbed — a magical little vault it carries on its back.
